Born on April 1, 1955, Humayun Akhtar Khan received his MSc degree in actuarial and business mathematics with specialization in investment and risk calculation from the University of Manitoba, Canada, in 1977. Earlier he did his schooling from Burnhall high school, Abbottabad and then proceeded to University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada to pursue his Bachelor's degree in business mathematics.He is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries, USA, since 1980 and of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries since 1981. He is the son of late General Akhtar Abdur Rehman, who served in General Ziaul Haq’s regime as the director of Inter Services Intelligence and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.He was elected to the National Assembly on Pakistan Muslim League (PML) ticket in 1988, 1990, 1993 and 1997 general elections and served as minister of state for investment from 1997 to 1999. After being elected on the PML ticket in 2002 elections, he served as the federal minister for commerce. He also served as the chairman of the Board of Investment and federal minister for investment during 1997-1999.He also takes care of a charitable trust set up by his family to help the poor. He has been actively participating in the World Trade Organisation negotiations, where he was selected as a facilitator for Hong Kong Ministerial Conference held in December 2005. He has also introduced reforms in the insurance sector in 2007. Recently he helped establish the Lahore Agenda for Farmers Rights to Global Markets in the 31st meeting of Cairns Group.
